Common Hobbies Of Programmers That Improves Their Coding Skills

Hello, buddies! You know, the stress busters of developers/programmers are Hobbies. Different types of programmer has different types of hobbies. But most of the hobbies that programmers/developers have are common. And I'd love to mention some developers who have common hobbies in each section to show you they are very common!

1. Writing / Blogging

Writing is a great hobby for programmers. You can combine your passion of writing with your passion for programming. Keeping a journal or writing a novel for fun can give you a great experience. Also, it is an amazing way of keeping a record of all what you’re thinking and memories.

“Writing, because the nature of writing has helped me document better code and understand the creative process in writing code.” – Joseph Mennemeier

2. Music

66.7% of survey respondents had this as a hobby. Everyone likes music, even if it is just listening to music. There is always a playlist of songs which helps in refreshing your mind. It is the kind of a hobby you can do along with the above-mentioned ones, like you can listen to music while cooking, exercising, while playing video games etc. No wonder it looks like so many developers have their iPod earbuds permanently installed!

I found developers in Hashnode who love music! (After checking number of about pages) - Sam Walpole, Dharmen Shah and Victoria Lo!

4. Reading

47.4% of survey respondents had this as a hobby. Curl up in your favorite chair and read on to find out whodunit. I’m sure several of you have read a book series which was then turned into a movie like Harry Potter and thought: “The books were SO much better. The movie left out a lot of details and changed too many things.” I found many developers in hashnode who love to read, so it's clear that people who love to write, love to read!

5. Board Games

A survey shows that 24.6% programmers love to play serious board games. Playing board games is one of the best ways to connect with people. While a lot of people choose video games over this, but it just doesn’t give that personal feeling. This doesn’t mean that you cannot play board games online, there are sites where you can play it with people across the globe. Apoorv Tyagi and Chris Bongers in Hashnode love to play chess!

6. Photography

Professional photographers often use similar skills as programmers. Just like programmers, photographers need intense problem-solving skills. Many people who have photography as their hobby find it very relaxing. Well the most important skill that a programmer can learn by taking up photography as a hobby is patience. A photographer requires a lot of patience as he/she might has to wait for hours to get that perfect shot and as you know how much patience it requires while coding. In Hashnode, our Daily Dev Tip Giver, Chris Bongers is a hobby photographer! image.png

7. Sports and Exercise

57.9% of survey respondents listed sports and exercise as a hobby. Are you all warmed up and ready to hit the field? Great! Programming is one of those jobs where people frequently forget about the importance of movement, or in some cases completely ignore the whole idea and choose to live an unhealthy, sedentary lifestyle.

One of the best ways is to start your day early and exercise before leaving for work. You can also pick up a sport that you can do at your local gymnasium, like swimming, badminton, or tennis—whatever suits you the best. GirlThatLovesToCode, Sam Walpole, Chris Bongers love sports and outdoor activites!
